I Tried to be Your Friend

The words below came to me early one morning many years ago. While I was lying in my bed somewhat asleep, I kept going over and over them in my mind.  I finally got up and wrote them down.  Why they came to me then, I do not know. And why I recently thought of them again, I do not know. What they mean, I do not know.  Who the friend is, I do not know.  What the meaning is, I do not know.  It is the only “poetic” moment I have ever had although I do have song lines that come to me often.

The words were meant for someone, and they may have been meant for you.  Are you lonely, without a friend, discouraged and needing to be loved?  If so, Jesus loves you and can give you peace.  Seek Him and He will reveal Himself to you.

I Tried to be a Friend*

By

Paw Bill

I tried to be a friend, you know,

But never having had a friend,

Nor never having been a friend,

My naiveté I did show.

But life goes on like memories pass,

And though the years have slowly passed,

Thoughts of you bring back the past,

Of times with you I thought would last.

But my life was changed by you,

And I’ll be ever grateful to,

The memories that I have of you,

Of times with you I thought might pass.

If I could but be a friend,

With teary eyes I’ve often thought,

Why all my life I’ve been distraught,

Of why no one will be my friend.

Life alone I’ve always lived,

And now my life is nearing end,

Who knows what might have been,

If only I had been a friend,

If only I had, had a friend,

I tried to be a your friend, you know.
